The Fair-The Festival
Come the month
of Kartik (Hindu Calendar-Cct/Nov)
each year, and you see the sleepy town of
The fair was originally for the selling and
buying of Camels by the people of villages surrounding Pushkar.
To sell the camels, it was necessary to make them most presentable, so the need
to decorate them, and then was born the Camel beauty Contest. For the Beauty
contest came up stalls of camel accessories. As people from villages far and
wide came and spent days here , there had to be food
stalls. The women folk came along with their men so obviously the fashion
accessory stalls had to be there. Thus was born the present day face of the
Fair- the camels, the food stalls, the local fashion accessory stalls, the
camel beauty contest, the local music and cultural shows, other
livestock(horses, sheep, goat, cows) trading shops. So here you find a
mind boggling combination of local culture, music, riot of colours
( if form of colorful men turbans, women Ghagras_ the long tunic, the camel accessories). Apart from the shopping extravganza, other attractions are the camel and horse
races. There is even a Camel judging competitions held at the fair. Other forms
of entertainment include folk dances and folk music of Rajasthan, enthralling
the crowd
